About this object

A side chair carved entirely by hand in the Louis XVI manner, left in raw, unsealed natural wood so that nothing stands between the eye and the carving. The design follows the neoclassical grammar of 1780s Paris: an oval back medallion of hand-woven cane framed by a carved laurel wreath, crowned by a flowing ribbon-and-bow cresting, over a caned seat, laurel-carved rails, and turned, fluted legs braced by a shaped X-stretcher. It is a French silhouette executed in the Indian carving tradition—two great furniture cultures meeting in a single frame. Every element here is hand work, and the raw finish proves it—there is no stain or lacquer to hide behind. The ribbon cresting is the bravura passage: carved in the round so the fabric appears to fold over itself, pierced through so light passes behind each loop. The wreath is cut in overlapping laurel bundles bound at intervals, the classical motif rendered leaf by leaf. The caning is woven in the traditional open octagonal pattern, strand by strand through hand-drilled holes—a craft India has practised continuously since these chairs first appeared, which is more than France can say. Left raw, the chair reads sculptural and contemporary—extraordinary against minimalist interiors, where a single one functions as functional art in a bedroom corner or beside a console. Finished, it transforms: a set of six or eight around a dining table, stained walnut or painted Gustavian grey, becomes formal European seating at a fraction of import cost. Buy it raw and decide; the wood will take whatever future you choose for it.
