About this object
The Gymkhana Table takes its name from the great Anglo-Indian clubs — those rooms of dark timber, deep leather, and unhurried afternoon light that once occupied the centre of every serious Indian city. Built in the English gentleman's furniture tradition, this piece embodies the craftsmanship of Edwardian club rooms where form, function, and heritage met in perfect balance. It represents a vanishing tradition of leather upholstery, brass work, and solid timber joinery. Constructed in solid Sheesham with hand-carved apron moulding in dark walnut finish, the table features a full diamond-tufted cognac tan top-grain leather surface with hand-set buttons drawn to consistent depth. An 8mm toughened float glass panel sits in a brass-finished steel perimeter frame, creating a functional surface while showcasing the meticulous tufting beneath. The geometry is precise and shadow-catching, held at approximately 120cm length, 65cm width, and 42cm height. This three-trade exercise brings together woodworker, upholsterer, and metalworker in a collaboration that production furniture cannot replicate. Each craftsman contributes decades of specialized skill: the Sheesham frame shaped and finished, the leather stretched over high-density foam and tufted with curved needles, the brass frame fabricated to tolerances that ensure perfect glass leveling. Comparable to Restoration Hardware's tufted leather ottoman tables but built in Jodhpur where these craft traditions remain deeply embedded, this piece delivers luxury heritage design at authentic craft pricing.
