From the Curator

""We built the first of these after a client showed me a photograph of a bed in a Loire farmhouse — painted, worn at the edges, the gold almost gone. The carving took our master carver eleven days; the leafing, three more. When it was done we rubbed the gold back by hand until it stopped looking new. Every bed in this line is made the same way, one at a time, in teak, because we intend them to be the antiques of fifty years from now.""

About this object

A king bed built entirely in solid teak and finished in the French Provincial manner: an arched, serpentine headboard crowned with a hand-carved acanthus crest, flanked by barley-twist posts rising to turned finials. The carving is picked out in antique gold leaf — applied by hand, then softly distressed so the gold reads as inherited rather than new — against an ivory lacquer ground with a faint aging glaze. Designed in the vocabulary of 18th-century French provinces, crafted in 2026 by Kahgez Atelier in North India. The craft sits in two disciplines that rarely share a workshop. The central crest is cut in relief from the solid headboard plank, not applied as a moulding, which is why the scrollwork holds crisp shadow lines. True antique gold leafing is laid in sheets over a sized surface, burnished, then rubbed back at the high points, so the ornament catches lamplight the way two-century-old French furniture does. Underneath is Burma-grade teak — chosen over the softwoods typical of painted European furniture because it does not move, split or surrender to the Indian climate. This is a bed for a room that commits — boiserie-style panelling, a gilt mirror, a chandelier if you have one, but it is equally capable of carrying a plain room alone, which is the truer test. Dress it in ivory, champagne and tobacco tones; the gold crest does the talking. Each bed is made to order, so sizing, finish tone and the degree of gold distressing can be adjusted. Pair with matching gold-leaf bedside tables, made to the same finish and available separately.
