About this object
A four-poster bed in the Gothic Revival manner, built entirely in solid teak — the form of the Tudor great chamber, reborn in the timber India trusts above all others. Four barley-twist posts rise past two metres, each spiral cut from a single solid column, springing from carved acanthus urns on octagonal plinths. Behind them stands a headboard composed like panelling from a manor hall: carved oval medallions set among fielded panels and reeded pilasters, beneath a shaped and carved cresting. The side and foot rails are upholstered in deep burgundy velvet, closed with lines of brass nailheads — a soft, saturated band of colour holding all that architecture to the floor. The barley twist is the piece's signature labour: a true spiral cut into solid stock, its pitch held constant over nearly two metres — drift even slightly and the eye reads it instantly, which is why honest twist posts are the first thing valuers check on beds of this type. Teak is the right material at this scale for unsentimental reasons: it is dense enough to carry the carving crisply, dimensionally stable through Indian seasons where lesser timbers crack at the post bases, and heavy enough that the bed stands in monumental silence — no creak, no sway. The headboard's medallions and panels are carved, not applied; the velvet rails are upholstered over the teak and nailed by hand, each brass head set individually. A four-poster does not furnish a bedroom — it becomes one. This bed wants ceiling height and will repay it: in a master bedroom it makes hotels feel ordinary afterward; in a farmhouse or heritage property it is the room guests photograph. The burgundy-and-dark-teak palette shown sits naturally with stone, tapestry and candlelight, but the polish options let the same architecture turn pale and Scandinavian or honey-warm and colonial. Beds are the furniture people keep longest and pass down first — this one is built with that intention.
